This course is for individuals who want to become a nurse, radiologist, community health worker, nutritionist, and any other career in the health care field. All of these careers require you to start by taking college courses in biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and psychology, and complete these courses with a grade of B or better. Our Health Science Essentials course will help prepare students to succeed in these college-level science courses. You will learn foundational concepts in the eleven organ systems, body functions & structure, and attain memory recall in medical terminology & body systems. You will also learn what to expect as a health science student in college, and examine degree programs at Chabot Community College and Ohlone Community College, and will gain some exposure to topics and opportunities in Biotechnology available at Ohlone College.

 

Pre-Requisites

  • Computer Skills & 8th grade Reading
  • Classroom lectures plus mandatory study labs, and field trips to the community college
  • Be able to complete homework assignments outside of class time

Objectives

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to:
    Produce a written or visual report showing your plans for success while becoming a healthcare professional
  • Discuss the fundamental relationship between anatomy and physiology
  • Explain how energy is invested, stored, and released via chemical reactions, particularly those reactions that are critical to life
  • Explain how the elements of the human body effect homeostasis and ones overall health
  • Explain the cellular cycle and discuss diseases caused by ribosome dysfunction
  • Identify each of the body systems and their respective purposes
  • Describe, generally , how each body system works
