College Prep Writing & Technology

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to college-level reading text and writing requirements, as well as, the educational technology tools/resources and the independent learning strategies commonly used in college courses.
Students will:
  • Read, discuss and answer questions from college textbooks in US History, American Government, Psychology, and Pre-Algebra
  • Increase your vocabulary and critical thinking skills for college-level reading
  • Learn how to plan, organize and write expository essays
  • Access learning materials through Google classroom
  • Type essays on a Google doc and MS Word
  • Create presentations on MS PowerPoint
 
Class Dates: NEXT START DATE IS MARCH 26, 2018
Class meets: Mon-Thur 11:45-1:45 AND Tue & Wed 9:45 – 11:30am (students must attend both)
Cost: FREE
Class Location: New Haven Adult School
 
Prerequisites: Completion of ADV ESL or test-out of ABE or Eligible to enroll in High School Diploma or GED Prep; AND Basic basic computer skills. HSD not required. 
 
Required:Students must...
  1. be able to attend classes two mornings and four afternoons each week AND the study lab two days each week
  2. enroll and plan to attend all weeks of instruction
  3. attend all classes (students who miss more than 16 hours of excused or unexcused class will be dropped)
 
How To Enroll -
Complete and submit the enrollment application AND
 
Current and/or former ESL, ABE. or ASE students
  • Bring the referral form from your current Advanced  ESL and/or ABE Class to on of the following CTE Assessment & Placement Dates
  • Attend the CTE Assessment & Placement meeting and take a basic computer skills assessment
  • Take your enrollment form to the front office and register for the course
 
Current CTE students
  • Bring proof of completion of Basic Computers & Keyboarding OR Proof of enrollment in any other CTE course to  one of  the following CTE Assessment & Placement Dates
  • Attend the CTE Assessment & Placement meeting and take the reading placement test (if you have not already done so)
  • Take your enrollment form to the front office and register for the course
 
All NEW Students
  • Attend the CTE Assessment & Placement meeting and take the reading placement  and the basic computer skills test
  • Take your enrollment form to the front office and register for the course
